PURPOSE

What you can do with Octocode

Octocode is a local-first code intelligence tool that indexes a repository into a map of files, symbols, imports and calls, and exposes semantic, structural and GraphRAG search to an agent through an MCP server.

Suitable tasks

Find code by meaning across a large repository
Read file signatures without loading whole files
Match AST patterns with structural search
Trace relationships and paths between code nodes
Search commit history
Use LSP go-to-definition and references through the agent

What Octocode can and cannot do

Capabilities

The MCP server exposes semantic_search, view_signatures, graphrag and structural_search; starting with --with-lsp adds language-server tools for definitions, references, hover, symbols and completion. Commit search, commit-message generation and code review run through the CLI.

Limitations

Works on a local checkout; GitHub API operations such as issues or pull requests are not documented
Indexed GraphRAG features need indexing and GraphRAG enabled in config
Cloud embedding providers receive the code chunks; use local FastEmbed models for fully offline use
LSP tools need a language server installed and named with --with-lsp
Supports 17 languages

Install with brew install muvon/tap/octocode, cargo install octocode, or the install.sh script
Optionally export VOYAGE_API_KEY or another provider key
Run octocode index inside the project
Add the server with command octocode and args mcp --path /your/project
