PURPOSE

What you can do with Browser Devtools MCP

Browser DevTools MCP is a Playwright-powered server that gives coding assistants browser automation and debugging (ARIA snapshots, ref-based interactions, screenshots, console and HTTP observability, request stubbing) plus a Node.js debugging platform. The package is marked deprecated and renamed to @ironbee-ai/devtools.

Suitable tasks
  • Navigate and interact with pages via ARIA refs
  • Capture screenshots, HTML, text, PDFs and recordings
  • Read console messages, HTTP requests and web vitals
  • Intercept and mock HTTP requests
  • Attach to a running Chrome over CDP
  • Debug a Node.js process with tracepoints and logpoints
CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

What Browser Devtools MCP can and cannot do

Capabilities

Browser tools grouped by prefix: content_*, interaction_*, navigation_*, o11y_*, a11y_*, sync_*, stub_* and an execute tool for scripted multi-step runs; a separate node platform exposes debug_* tools. React, scenario and Figma comparison tools are also described.

Documented tools
  • navigation_go-to
  • navigation_go-back-or-forward
  • navigation_reload
  • interaction_click
  • interaction_fill
  • interaction_hover
  • interaction_press-key
  • interaction_select
  • interaction_drag
  • interaction_scroll
  • interaction_resize-viewport
  • interaction_resize-window
  • content_take-screenshot
  • content_get-as-html
  • content_get-as-text
  • content_save-as-pdf
  • content_start-recording
  • content_stop-recording
  • o11y_get-console-messages
  • o11y_get-http-requests
  • o11y_get-web-vitals
  • a11y_take-aria-snapshot
  • a11y_take-ax-tree-snapshot
  • sync_wait-for-network-idle
  • stub_intercept-http-request
  • execute
  • debug_connect
  • debug_resolve-source-location
Limitations
  • The npm package is deprecated and no longer maintained; future releases ship as @ironbee-ai/devtools
  • execute scripts cannot use require, import, process, fs, Buffer or fetch; at most 50 callTool invocations
  • Element refs are valid only until the next ARIA snapshot or navigation
  • Window resizing works best on Chromium and fails on Firefox/WebKit; CDP attach is Chromium-only and does not start Chrome
  • React tools need BROWSER_PERSISTENT_ENABLE=true and a manually installed React DevTools extension

INSTALLATION AND FIRST TASK

Connect Browser Devtools MCP and confirm it works

  1. Add command npx with args ["-y", "browser-devtools-mcp"] under mcpServers (the deprecation notice points to @ironbee-ai/devtools instead)
  2. Install a browser with npx playwright install chromium (--with-deps on Linux)
  3. Set BROWSER_HEADLESS_ENABLE=false to see the window, or BROWSER_CDP_ENABLE=true to attach to a Chrome running with remote debugging

Replace each placeholder with your own value before saving.

First successful task

Ask the agent to open a page, take an ARIA snapshot and fill a form field by ref.

Expected: navigation_go-to loads the page, a11y_take-aria-snapshot returns elements with refs, and interaction_fill types into the chosen field.

ALTERNATIVES

When to choose another server

  • Playwright MCP Server#10

You want an actively maintained Playwright server with the same snapshot-and-ref approach.

  • Chrome DevTools MCP#1

You need Chrome's performance, memory and Lighthouse tooling.

  • mcp-playwright#1,019

You want Playwright codegen rather than observability tools.
