PURPOSE

What you can do with Mongodb MCP Server

MongoDB's official MCP server lets an agent query and manage MongoDB databases and, with Atlas API credentials, administer Atlas projects, clusters, users, access lists and stream processing.

Suitable tasks
  • Find, aggregate and count documents
  • Inspect schemas, indexes and database stats
  • Create collections and indexes, update or delete data
  • List and manage Atlas projects, clusters and users
  • Load sample data and read performance advice
  • Search MongoDB's knowledge base
CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

What Mongodb MCP Server can and cannot do

Capabilities

Database tools cover connect/disconnect, CRUD, aggregation, explain, export, indexes, schema and logs; Atlas tools manage orgs, projects, clusters, users, access lists, alerts and streams; plus Atlas Local deployments and knowledge search. --readOnly keeps only read, connect and metadata tools, and --disabledTools removes tools, categories or operation types.

Documented tools
  • connect
  • list-databases
  • list-collections
  • find
  • aggregate
  • count
  • collection-schema
  • collection-indexes
  • explain
  • export
  • insert-many
  • update-many
  • delete-many
  • create-collection
  • create-index
  • drop-collection
  • db-stats
  • mongodb-logs
  • atlas-list-projects
  • atlas-list-clusters
  • atlas-create-free-cluster
  • atlas-connect-cluster
  • atlas-create-db-user
  • atlas-get-performance-advisor
  • search-knowledge
Limitations
  • Atlas tools are unavailable without Atlas service-account credentials
  • The remote Atlas MCP server needs OAuth; static API keys over HTTP are not accepted
  • New clusters have no connection string until IDLE, and sample dataset loads take 1–5 minutes
  • Server-side JavaScript ($where, $function) is blocked by default; $out/$merge stages always ask for confirmation
  • The HTTP transport refuses non-loopback hosts unless dangerousHostBinding is enabled
REQUIREMENTS

Runtime
Node.js 22.13.0+ via npx mongodb-mcp-server@latest, or Docker image mongodb/mongodb-mcp-server
Credentials
MDB_MCP_CONNECTION_STRING for database tools; MDB_MCP_API_CLIENT_ID and MDB_MCP_API_CLIENT_SECRET (Atlas service account) for Atlas tools
Permissions
Least-privilege Atlas roles per task, e.g. Project Read Only to view clusters, Project Cluster Manager to create them; Organization Owner is discouraged
Payment
Atlas free cluster available via atlas-create-free-cluster; dedicated clusters (M10+) are billed by Atlas

INSTALLATION AND FIRST TASK

Connect Mongodb MCP Server and confirm it works

  1. Run npx -y mongodb-mcp-server@latest setup to be walked through connection string or Atlas credentials
  2. Or add command npx with args ["-y", "mongodb-mcp-server@latest", "--readOnly"] and MDB_MCP_CONNECTION_STRING in env
  3. Pass credentials through environment variables, not command-line arguments
  4. Drop --readOnly only when you need writes

First successful task

Ask the agent to list the databases on the connected deployment.

Expected: The agent calls list-databases and returns database names with their sizes.

ALTERNATIVES

When to choose another server

  • Postgres MCP#724

Your data is in PostgreSQL rather than MongoDB.

  • MongoDB Lens#5,420

You want a community MongoDB server with a different tool mix.

  • Supabase MCP Server#58

You run on Supabase and want database plus platform management.
