A starter example for exploring music and video metadata with an MCP-compatible AI assistant. This is a setup guide, not a hosted media application. UnClick is in beta.
INSTALL THE STANDALONES Install Node.js with npm. In a client that supports local stdio MCP servers, add: Spotify: command npx; arguments ["-y", "@unclick/spotify-mcp@0.1.0"] YouTube: command npx; arguments ["-y", "@unclick/youtube-mcp@0.1.0"] Client configuration formats vary. Restart or reconnect the client after saving. These were the published versions checked on 9 October 2026.
VS CODE EXAMPLE For the portable workspace format, save this as .mcp.json in the project root. If that file already exists, merge these entries into its mcpServers object rather than replacing it. { "mcpServers": { "unclick-spotify": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@unclick/spotify-mcp@0.1.0" ] }, "unclick-youtube": { "type": "stdio", "command": "npx", "args": [ "-y", "@unclick/youtube-mcp@0.1.0" ] } } }
The older .vscode/mcp.json format uses a top-level servers object instead. Follow your installed client's format. VS Code setup reference: https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/agent-customization/mcp-servers
CONNECT YOUR PROVIDER Spotify 0.1.0 needs a Spotify access token in the bearer_token tool argument. It does not handle the OAuth flow or token refresh for you. https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/concepts/authorization
YouTube 0.1.0 needs a YouTube Data API key in the api_key tool argument. Enable that API in your Google project first. https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/getting-started
Use your client's private credential handling. Do not paste real keys into public examples. These versions read the credentials from tool arguments; setting an environment variable alone does not supply them.
TRY IT Spotify: "Search Spotify for five tracks matching Kind of Blue." YouTube: "Find five videos about the James Webb telescope, newest first." Then use a returned video ID to ask for its duration and available statistics.
LIMITS These examples retrieve metadata. They do not play music, download media or return transcripts. The declared youtube_get_captions tool is not supported by this version's API-key-only authentication; Google requires OAuth for captions.list. https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/captions/list
Spotify API availability depends on your app's provider access. Do not assume audio features or recommendations are available. Package contents were checked; this guide does not claim live provider verification.
QUICK CHECKS If npx is not found, check that Node.js/npm is installed and available on PATH, then restart the client. If tools appear but searches fail, check the provider credential and API access. A successful tool listing alone does not verify provider access. This configuration has been checked against client documentation, not run in VS Code.
IF A CALL FAILS Spotify: for 401, check or renew your access token. For 403, check app access and scopes. For 429, pause and reduce calls. Version 0.1.0 does not show Spotify's Retry-After header; avoid repeated automatic retries. https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/concepts/api-calls https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/concepts/rate-limits
YouTube: read the error reason. For quotaExceeded, stop repeated calls and check your project's quota. Reinstalling does not restore quota or permissions. https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/errors
An empty search can mean no matches: broaden the query or reduce filters. Missing video statistics mean unavailable data, not zero.
EXPLORE UNCLICK The hosted beta has separate setup for its Boardroom, memory and tools: https://unclick.world/connect These two standalone packages do not include the whole hosted platform.
